That's kind of a mixed bag of issues right there.

    •  Health Care- The Catholic church supports quality health care for everyone, and it has always been my experiences with the Catholic church (catholic school from daycare through 12th grade) that they don't really care if it's the government or the private sector who can offer people, affordable, quality Health Care.

    •  Dealth Penalty-  While the Catholic Church does not intrinsically oppose the Death Penalty, Catholic Doctrine does teach that "if bloodless means are sufficient to defend human lives against an agressor and to protect public order and the safety of persons, public authority should limit itself to such means."  I would assume that the US Penal system would be a bloodless mean.  In addition, Pope John Paul II has been a most fervent advocate against the Death Penalty.

    •  Stem cell research & In-vitro fertilization-  This is where it turns to the conservative side.  The Catholic Church does not support either, for the reason that in both cases so many embryos are lost in either process (I have to agree with them there) and for their belief that this is a devaluation of human life.  In addition, the Catholic Church teaches that In-vitro fertilization also devalues marriage (Don't agree there).

    •  Gay Marriage- I don't think this one needs to be explained.

So let's tally that up.  Two decent positions on Health Care and the Death Penalty.  A toss-up (at least in my point of view) on In-vitro and stem cell research, and a bad position on gay marriage.

Now in addition to this, the Catholic church was a definite opponent AGAINST the Iraq war and is one of the most powerful social justice groups in the world.  Also, in my area, the Catholic Church has consistently fought for the poor and working class on issues including better city servies (infrastructure, sanitation, transportation, job training) and education.

In conclusion, I believe your statement that the Catholic Church supports President Bush is quite untrue.  Saying that the Catholic Church supports President Bush when a handful of priests are promoting their own political agenda in their parishes is like saying that the Democratic mayor in Minnesota who endorsed President Bush means that all Democrats now support President Bush.

By the way, what the hell is going on in the upper Midwest with all of these people who are traditionally Democratic in Republican Texas (Catholic priests, DEMOCRATIC mayors) supporting Bush?
