A girlfriend came over from Cuba to land in Miami in 1962 as a 12 year old.  She arrived alone and was met by local family services.  She spoke no English. This involved a program that the CIA set up, (sorry, if I'm fuzzy about details here. Perhaps a clearer story can be told, thanks),  to bring over children first and then the parents would come shortly after.  In any case, the Cuban missile situation immediately unfolded and she didn't see her folks for 5 years.

And you are right that the younger generations see things differently.  She's been a Deadhead for 30 years.

And it is very perceptive to realize the deep spiritual connection that many Cubans feel with their homeland and religion.

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world.

The CIA created a rumor that all children would be sent to the USSR to be "educated" and that the parents would lose their parental rights over them. That's why some of them sent their kids here - even if it was to foster homes, and camps, where some were abused. Some never were reunited with their parents again, because the parents in the end couldn't get out of Cuba. The Miami Catholic Church was a major player in the situation, which traumatized most of the kids.
