    The cool thing is, if those are polygonal frost wedges we're seeing, it tells us a lot about the structure of the place without making a dent in the surface.

    There has to be a freeze/thaw cycle.  There has to be soil that's saturated with water.  And the pore size for heaving has limits that puts the dominant particle size in the soil in the silt range.
