    Every city in the country had street cars. GM and the oil and tire companies conspired to buy up the lines, rip them out, replace them with buses (and then start cutting back on bus service). This was in the 40s. California fined the companies $25,000 for doing this.

    L.A. once had a fabulous, extensive system of light rail. But even little podunk towns had streetcars you could ride downtown to do all your shopping, or ride out to the country for a nice day trip.
