Another diary is discussing "Jeffrey Berman:  Obama's Delegate Mastermind", the author of the spreadsheet. It (and the underlying Politico profile of Berman) sing the praises of the sheet's accuracy, but not in the really precise numbers I'd like. Still, even a gloss of "called the wrong winner in only two states" isn't good enough, especially because the entire point (which Smith & Zenilman still don't seem to grasp in that Politico article) is that the margins of victory are even more important than the simple 50%+1 "victories" the mass media is obsessed with, but which don't tell you how bigger victories, even in smaller states, can beat smaller victories in big states. Which was in fact the genius of Berman and the Obama campaign.

And which in fact should be how the national general election is counted, not the 50%+1 "winner take all" in each Electoral College state. I expect Berman and Obama to run that table as well, and the Congressional scorecards through the Obama administration. I hope they also use their expertise in the warped delegate playing field, both in primaries and the Electoral College, to level them both into democratic contests rather than grand games.

Just take the Obama campaign spreadsheet, widely available, and add a column for the actual results, then a column which divides the difference between those two numbers by the actual result number. Voila! That's the final analysis.

      •  no- I meant to make yours a "top comment".. (0+ / 0-)

tho' I didn't know the answer to the other question either...

What was important about your comment, IMHO, was that you expanded on the analysis and also linked it to Obama's tasks, once he's elected.

The next president's going to spend 4-8 years facing abominations hidden by Bush coming rocketing out of sewerholes, burning and exploding on contact. Keeping his cool will be the greatest service Obama can render a nation.
