  •  A novel idea, (0+ / 0-)

to not "go on rants without doing your homework"?

The depressing regularity of rants about the military, the Constitution, impeachment, so many things without the slightest concept of how these things actually work is depressing. We cannot all be experts but the level of misinformation that is often a simple click or two away is an astounding example of laziness.

It seeps into the so called "professional reporter" ranks as well. I almost bit through my coffee cup rim when I first read "government employees" in place of "soldiers" in an article. As I said elsewhere yesterday, show me an "employee" that cannot quit or resign rather than face an "employer's" demand they face mortal danger.

There is much to be said for having a significant portion of our population have some experience in service, either military or civilian, as part of growing up. They got an idea of how things worked they could apply to the citizenship. For one thing, that there are places and situations where there is loss of personal freedom. Maybe mommy and daddy could never tell them not to go out tonight and make it stick but that DI or First Sergeant sure could. A bit of a reality check on a population too insulated from reality is not a bad idea.

One even learns the humor of scrubbing garbage bins with toothbrushes and that too is a valuable life lesson when faced with unavoidable illogic. When clearing debris in a cold rain, digging out in a snowstorm and other such events I've been able to chuckle at the memory of a bunch of guys in a stinking bin with toothbrushes and the muttered foul language. Lightens the load.

The only foes that threaten America are the enemies at home, and those are ignorance, superstition, and incompetence. [Elbert Hubbard]
