    It argues that the Roman Empire died of the same kind of imbalances of wealth and political power that triggered the Great Depression in the USA (different circumstances) and which have been repeated today with the help of our elected officials.

    It may well be that the weakening of civil liberties in this timeframe, like that of the Romans, is a reflection of the economic and political situation.
