    14 years.  Then in the 14th year, the author could file for a renewal of another 14 years, 28 years total.  There were not very many renewals, I think something like 15% of works that had been copyrighted in the first place.  The term length eventually increased to 28+28 years where it stayed til 1977.  The current system of near-infinite copyright is quite recent in the scheme of things.
