Go to your nearest Trader Joe's (or one nearby that you don't frequent, if it makes you more comfortable).  Fill up your cart with Charles Shaw wine and bottled water.  Fill it up all the way.

Walk up to the counter.  Allow the clerk to ring it up.  Be sure to bring a picture of Maria Isabel Vasquez Jimenez with the following note:

Maria Isabel Vasquez Jimenez, 17 year old and pregnant, died recently of dehydration to produce this wine.  Like many farmworkers, she had inadequate access to water and shade.  Please ask Bronco Winery to treat farmworkers humanely.

When the clerk asks for payment, hand them the picture and the note and politely apologize for their time and trouble.  Then ask them to pass the note on to their manager along with the voided transaction.

their job. The cashier in line has nothing to do with any of Trader Joe's many suppliers.

      •  What am I advocating "doing" to them? (0+ / 0-)

Will they go unpaid for their time?  I specified apologizing for the inconvenience, but that's all it is, an inconvenience.  But a message will be sent.

If I were working a counter and someone had handed me this picture, I'd be glad to help pass on the message with some OT.

Save it for when we really need it. Trader Joe's will respond once they're fully aware of it.

When activists pull crap like that when it's sooo not needed, it's seen as nothing but an ego trip and ups the chances that fewer will bother to listen or watch the next time a drama IS needed.

To send a message from the UFW. TJ will get it. They are pretty good on such things. Start soft, the if they don't respond maybe different tactics are in order. But having worked in s-hole service jobs, making tired employees restock stuff kinda sucks, cause they didn't make the situation, and while better off they are only a few steps away from the people who are the reason this diary was done--they don't have control of their work environment, they have no say in decisions of management, they have no say in their working conditions.

along a theatrical message like this, but what does it accomplish that writing TJ's doesn't?

Because all are made by Bronco, who own West Coast Grape, who own and manage the land that Mrs. Jimenez died on. Let Trader Joe's know you won't buy them and let Bronco know you won't buy them until labor safety is guaranteed and demonstrated.

Here's bronco's information from my copy of Beverage Marketing 2008:

      •  The cashier is paid an hourly wage (1+ / 0-)

If they ring up an order that is voided, they get paid the same amount as if it is not voided, and they get to go home at the same time either way.  They might think you are goofy, but they won't care, really.

    •  Not only that. Trader Joe's is NOT Walmart (4+ / 0-)

Let's just call and write. I have every faith they will respond in a quick and responsible manner (if they have not already.)

    •  Doing this to cashiers.... (1+ / 0-)

      is just meaningless.
The cashiers have nothing to do with any of the work standards practiced by the company.  A cashiers job is an hourly one and probably not paid very well.  To add this to a very long list of customer abuse a cashier has to endure smilingly during an 8 hour shift is really not appropriate.
Contact the store managers and the company itself.

I think, therefore I am........................... Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose
