but please go into the link I provided in a diary I wrote earlier today: it is a website that clearly seeks to distance Christians from James Dobson's points of view.

I went to your linked diary, mierts, and found the comments by Manhattanman.  He cites number after number after number of atheist-this and atheist-that as responsible for much of the evils in the world, yet provides not a single link, reference, or citation to back up his screed.

Further on, Manhattanman cites "...criminals" as another source of woe unto mankind, implicitly stating (in my opinion) that atheism is also responsible for criminality.  Yet when we examine the religious beliefs of the prison population an entirely different picture emerges of the religious identification of the incarcerated (i.e. the "criminals").

In 1997, fully 74% of the federal prison population consisted of persons identifying themselves as either Catholic or Protestant, with Catholics in the lead.

      Only 7% were Muslim.

Scarcely 2/10 of one-percent (0.209%) religiously identified themselves as "atheist", yet at that time (1997, the date of the Federal Bureau of Prison's cited statistics) atheists made up over 8% of the total American adult population.

Atheism leads to criminality?  Not according to these figures.  I'm not saying that religion does either, but neither does it appear that holding religious belief is any particular deterrent to crime.

      Just my two-cent's worth.

      Peace,

      Your friendly neighborhood atheist.

      •  You raise good points (0+ / 0-)

Personally, as you could probably tell from my posts, I personally don't care about who has the highest number of corpses to their name: religious devotees or atheists. Everyone believes in something, even if it's nothing. And in the name of what they believe in, they can commit some horrible things. (Except believers in Santa Claus, but perhaps that's because they're children).

        Peace. Shalom. Salaam.
