What part of accountability for illegally spying on Americans does Sen. Dianne Feinstein not understand?

At this very minute, the Senate is debating whether or not to grant retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies who illegally spied on Americans on behalf of the Bush Administration. The Senate is once again trying to pass a "compromise bill" on re-authorizing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) where no compromise exists.

Retroactive immunity for telecoms -- and for the Bush Administration -- is simply unacceptable.

As Charlie Brown -- a Democratic candidate for Congress in the rural, conservative 4th district of California -- wrote in a longer blog post on Daily Kos (posted in full below) yesterday:

... When I see companies acting "in the interest of national security" held to a lower standard of accountability than the dedicated professionals charged with our nation's defense, silence is not an option.

Indeed, silence is not an option.

We have good news and bad news. The good news is Sen. Dianne Feinstein announced on the Senate floor today that she will support an amendment to strip retroactive immunity for telecom companies from the bill. But the bad news is that may not be enough to stop the capitulation of Congress on FISA.

Senator Feinstein needs to do everything within her power, including supporting a filibuster, to stop immunity for lawbreaking companies from becoming law.

Can you call her and tell her to support a filibuster, if necessary?

    Sen. Dianne Feinstein:

    (415) 393-0707 (San Francisco, CA)

Here is some suggested text for your call:

"I am calling to demand Senator Feinstein support a filibuster of any bill that will grant immunity to telecom companies that illegally spied on innocent Americans. Can I count on the Senator to do whatever it takes to oppose retroactive immunity?"

Please click here to report the results of your call. If you get voicemail, leave a message and fill up the Senator's mailbox:

Thank you for everything you are doing to make 2008 a new era for progressive politics in California and the country.
