  •  Absolutely agree! (9+ / 0-)

Wallis is first and foremost about promoting Wallis as the creator of a new paradigm for people of faith and progressives, when all he is doing is standing on the shoulders of giants to preen himself.

He's not going to win hearts among progressives by repeating RW talking points and reinforcing anti-choice memes.

While his point is good--Democrats could do a better job of articulating support for reducing the need for abortion, he makes it sound like Republicans and evangelicals are ahead of us. In fact, the truth is the exact opposite. There is only one proven way to reduce the abortion rate: widespread availability of contraception and education in its proper use. Everything else (adoption, sex education, healthcare) supports this. But across cultures, countries, and communities, it is the ONLY proven means.

Most of the people who favor criminalizing abortion also oppose the very things that would reduce the need for abortion. Instead of preaching at progressives to be nicer to conservatives and evangelicals, he should be taking them to task for their hypocrisy and dishonesty.

    •  It puts the GOP on the defensive-where they are (8+ / 0-)

rightfully shown to trot out the abortion and defense of marriage every four years, then do nothing.

Charts and graphs could then be used to prove the point, how education and prevention are better than burying the head in some graft-prone program advocating abstinence.

Hear, hear.  Yet another instance where I get the feeling that Wallis doesn't consider an idea to be valid until it is uttered from his lips.

"Don't break your arm patting yourself on the back."

Jim Wallis thinks he invented faith on the left. A lot of progressive people of faith were doing just fine before he appointed himself their spokesman.

representative of faith on the Left, when he really isn't on the left. On poverty, sure. Racial issues, yep. But on women's issues? No. GLBT issues? Unless he has changed his mind, his attitude there is that folks should stop raising such a fuss. (toward the back of the book, I can cite page # after I get home tonight, if needed). So, that would be a "Heck, no".

I wish some of the theologians on the left would speak up more. Or that there were great activists like the Berrigan brothers (who were priests). Daniel is still around, per wikipedia. Now, here's what a religious professional's resume should look like:

Daniel Berrigan, S.J. (born May 9, 1921) is a poet, American peace activist, and Roman Catholic priest. Daniel and his brother Philip were for a time on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list for committing acts of vandalism including destroying government property.

pointing out that Jim Wallis, good on poverty and race, has been insultingly crummy on queer issues.

God's Politics, check out the section on GLBT issues. He really does say that people should stop making such a fuss about it. My note in the margin "I'll shut up when all my brothers & sisters have equal rights"

              •  Oh, I know, I've read it. (0+ / 0-)

Jim has always been stuffy on this.  I'm queer and also have worked in faith communities a great deal and every queer person of faith I know is really quite tired of Jim on this issue.
