    •  he got way more votes than Carter (1+ / 0-)

which is all that matters. This idea that 50% is so meaningful is bullshit. A landslide and mandate comes when you get by far the most votes. In 2007, when the President of South Korea was elected with 48% of the vote, it was considered a landslide by nearly the whole world, as was the case in Argentina when their Presient got 45 percent to her nearest rivals 22%. Margin is what matters.

      •  different definitions of landslide - don't agree (0+ / 0-)

        with your definition.

IF the media declares, then it is true !

well, it is true if those who lost have such shitty messaging that the media lies become the conventional wisdom.

        you want to call .5075 * .55 a landslide ?

go ahead, it is still kind of a free country.

I'd define a landslide as over 65% of eligible voters, not 50% of the 55% who showed up, which is about 28% of the eligible voters.

about 28% is a Landslide ?? yeah, whatever.

        rmm.

        •  think about it: (0+ / 0-)

if a person by far gets the most votes, and you know that as many people can run as want to, and some people are gonna vote for them, then the person who by far got the most votes should get to have a "landslide." That is why it is completely fair to declare a plurality, if the number is much larger than other's, a landslide. Mutliple choice means that enough may vote for another choice that one cannot mathematically get 50%, but if a person wins 49-39, the word landslide is ok. Of course if someone wins 58-40, its a landslide too. or 50.7-30-19.3. But 50.7-48.3=/=not a landslide. Picture a pie chart, with a winner of 48-28-26, the 48 one will be the biggest by far. so will 60-40. But 50.01-49.09 will be very slightly different on a pie chart.

          •  I'm a math teacher ;) I KNOW what a pie chart (0+ / 0-)

looks like, and I know what per cents are.

            We have different definitions -

            On the other hand,

IF I was running against any fascist, and I won by 1 freaking vote, I'd do to them EXACTLY what they do to us:

            I'd declare a Landslide,

            I'd declare a Mandate,

I'd fight to bury the bastards 24*7*365.

      •  Well, the South Korean president's mandate (0+ / 0-)

... didn't last too long.  He is now less popular in Korea than Bush is in America.  I almost feel sorry for the megalomaniacal right-wing scumbag.

From here, it seems like Korean voters are about 7 years quicker on the uptake than Americans.
