    ...there have been very few elections where the Republican Party did not have someone from Texas (or at least someone who pretended to be from Texas) on their ticket.

    I think that has helped the Republicans there in recent years, and given an impression of Texas as being more "red" than it really is.

    Remember... As recently as 1996 - when no one on the GOP ticket was from TX - the Clinton campaign targed that state as a place he could "win."  Granted, Ross Perot (who was from Texas) probably helped a lot that year, by draining votes away from Dole.  But, Texas was still competetive.
