  •  This won't work (0+ / 0-)

As a former member, you probably read the Book of Mormon. You'd see from the account there that the church perseveres on no matter the situation, no matter the odds. If they need to flee with a mere few, they will do so. And if the church as a whole goes astray, God will simply take the few who remain and rebuild.

As much as I don't agree with the church taking this fight, going against them is, as Neal A. Maxwell stated one General Conference, like a small dog barking as the massive caravan goes forward. I'm on the sidelines on this one (even if I were living in California).

    •  I applaud the perseverance of pioneer ancestors - (0+ / 0-)

and I've read the Book of Mormon - but I'm also up-to-speed on a lot of history that's been made since 1830.

When perseverance fails, expedience takes over.

The LDS Church is on the losing side of this battle.  Once it's lost, they'll figure out how to regroup and carry on.  As they always have.

But the church is gonna be carrying on in a political environment that I'm determined to shape in accordance with my own understanding of what the American project is all about.  America messed up when they ran the Mormons out.  The Mormons are messing up trying to repay that bit of kindness with their own persecution of gay Americans.  The only way this nonsense is gonna stop is for those of us who know better to step up, make our position clear, and win the political battle.  And we are.

After California, the LDS Church is gonna be the dog that didn't bark when it comes to the next states we're gonna be fightin' this battle in.

Please go ahead and explain to me again why the LDS Church isn't fighting this battle in MA?

      •  The Church persevered for quite a while (0+ / 0-)

when facing opposition and outcry to its early practices of polygamy.  Only when statehood for Utah became paramount did the Church renounce its polygamous doctrine; only under pressure did the Church yield.

Only in 1979 did the Church allow Blacks into the Priesthood; only under pressure did the Church yield.

Only under extreme pressure has the Fundamentalist LDS announced a new doctrine that will prohibit the marrying off of underage girls to sex-obsessed FLDS old men.

ONLY UNDER PRESSURE will the LDS fully accept and acknowledge the fact that gay couples can form families as strong, and as dedicated to the Church, as any same-sex family can.

        Put. The. Pressure. On.

(I know this comment is way past the time your diary has scrolled of the list.  I hope you, like me, revisit your diaries to see if anything new was added after it has gone into dKos archive oblivion.  I hope you make Diary Rescue.)

        •  I'm afraid our hopes have been dashed ... (0+ / 0-)

... at least in terms of this diary gettin' rescued.

No worries.  I think we're well on the way to seeing our hopes realized on more important fronts, namely equal recognition of gay Americans.  Thank you for your comment.
