I grew up in a household where people believed in 'Armageddon', the idea that god is going to kill everyone (soon!) who wasn't a member of our church. Church pamphlets carried pictures of this imminent carnage as a staple fear-generator.  Also, the church in question practices excommunication and shunning, including threats (sometimes carried through) of throwing minor children out on the street if they disobeyed any of the thousands of rules as to what was acceptable and what was 'satanic'.  Among those rules: I was forbidden any form of education beyond high school or trade school.  I didn't go back to get a degree until my 30s, at which point the church did excommunicate me and my family began shunning me.

And I consider myself to be one of the lucky ones; I escaped any major physical abuse, sexual abuse, and did not attempt suicide.  Polls conducted among survivors of this group show that 60% or so have attempted or seriously considered suicide, after being expelled/leaving the church.
