  •  It's not the Church, it's the culture (0+ / 0-)

Well, at least it's mostly the culture. The Church does promote some socially conservative causes to be sure, but there's nothing in the theology that would predispose someone to be a Republican. I've never run into anything, anyways, and I've been (and continue to be) a member of the LDS church all of my life. Granted, when I was younger I thought that Conservative ideology was the best fit with what I'd learned in the scriptures. Now, however, I see that you can't mix religion and politics that way. That's one key to unlocking the state for Democrats -- teaching people that religion and politics don't mix. The Bush administration is Exhibit Number One with respect to that, hence I think it would be a good year to start laying the groundwork.

About 36% of the state of Idaho is LDS.
About 36% of the state legislators are LDS.
All LDS state legislators are Republican.
I think that is pretty telling as to the effect of either the church/theology/culture.

As a side note, every, I mean every LDS I've discussed politics with here are Repubs, and most can never articulate why beyond either abortion, or they don't want liberals in charge of the government.

And, State Rep. James Ruchti graduated West Point.

I'm also conjecturing he'll be Governor of Idaho sometime within the next 15 years. You heard it here first.

        •  I happily stand corrected! (0+ / 0-)

And for being LDS he's not too il-liberal (not really pro-choice, a few other blue-dog tendencies.)
