was McCain was given the opportunity to get out of prison. The same opportunity many soldiers were given. They merely had to say that the US was waging an illegal war and testify to the horrors that the US was forcing upon Vietnam. They all refused. Not just McCain.

    •  according to Col. Hackworth and his (0+ / 0-)

research into this, the most decorated officer in VN.  Three other POWs who were there witnessed his commanding officer ordering him not to leave and McCain followed orders.

So if you give credit to three unsubstantiated witnesses to his own unsubstantiated account, he's blowing that out of proportion.  He's just a guy who was there, not anything exceptional, just like all the other POWs.

BTW, McCain did say that, on film and in his own memoirs, but that is not one of the things I fault him for.  I fault him for other things while a POW, Naval officer, and senator.

It looks just like a Telefunken U47 - with leather...

he claims they wanted to send him home but he refused thinking they wanted to score points because of his father's position in the military.  And possibly his grandfathers.  That it would disgrace their service and be a psyche coup of his captors.  So he stayed.
