  •  Gephardt would've been a great pick for Kerry (0+ / 0-)

    but his time has passed.

    •  I don't know (0+ / 0-)

If anyone would have helped Kerry in 2004, Edwards sure didn't, davy.

      •  It's impossible to say (1+ / 0-)

However, my sneaking suspicion is that only John Kerry could have helped John Kerry.

He lost when he allowed himself to be defined by the Republicans, and when he didn't respond adequately to the Swift Boat attacks.

        •  I agree John Kerry was a lousy candidate (0+ / 0-)

And Gephardt wouldn't have helped because he was another lousy candidate, but maybe he could have gotten just enough labor support to push Kerry over the top.

I have a feeling Kerry would have been a lousy President though.

          •  I agree, it's possible... (0+ / 0-)

...but I never think we can know these "what ifs" for sure.  At least unless one of us were to come across the device from Sliders and could check on these things in alternate universes.

I personally hold mixed feelings on Dick Gephardt.  On the one hand, he's really good on labor and (from my perspective, anyway) trade issues, which are important to me.

On the other hand, he's always seemed overly hawkish to me.  This was bad with Iraq, yes, but his harsh rhetoric towards China was also somewhat disturbing for me.  I always had this little fear that he'd somehow push us into a third world war, or at least set up a situation where it was possible.

He'd be an "acceptable" VP pick for me, even though I'd still hold that worry about what would happen in foreign affairs were he to become president.  Nevertheless, there are much better Democrats I feel that Senator Obama could pick.
