    on how fast it can be, because of the logistics of pulling out an occupation force. I think the point is more that just because we want all the troops out in a year, doesn't mean we actually can do that. And, again, I'm not saying there isn't a world of difference between really pulling out the troops and pretending to, or that we won't know in much less than 2-3 years which one is happening.

      I just take exception with the idea that because we can't predict everything we should just skip the timetable. A timetable is a plan, a set of goals. Yes, conditions may muck it up - but that doesn't mean you skip making goals entirely.

        benchmarks are needed, but Obama needs some flexibility to adapt to realities on the ground as well.  If I didn't have confidence that he intends to pull our troops out, then I would be more anxious to see a set timetable.
