      It was intended to note that the group the commenter I was responding to was blaming for the incident, by the broadness of the term, included not only perpetrators but victims.

      One of my Christian friends came out in college. I got to be emotional support as the Baptist Student Union and local Gay Straight Alliance decided they didn't want like people like him near them. One of the few times I ever heard of the two campus factions agreeing on something, by the way.

      So yes, that particular aspect of the heinous act we are discussing is important to me, both in terms of how I am now emotionally responding to finally learning about it and in terms of what I've seen other humans go through.

      But I would still care that this attack had happened even if the victims had been simply identified as gay with no known mention of their religions (or corresponding lack of religion, if that was the case instead) available in the historical record.
