  •  It's maternity leave and wage stagnation (5+ / 0-)

and vacation time and life expectancy that get me, though.  Addition to buying cheap Chinese junk disguises the fact that we are happy to ask very little of our own society.

so many politicians shake their pom-poms and scream "family-friendly" about their policies. HA! Family-friendly is 4 weeks paid vacation a year; a 35-hour work week; universal health care; quality child care; actual maternity and family emergency leave; free or very cheap higher education; and just about all the things we DON'T have that work to secure people's basic livelihood, and remove a good portion of the stress of everyday life, so that people can actually enjoy and nurture their families.

over other rights.  Our devotion to property rights is surprisingly stubborn.  Maybe it has to do with the fact that our country is so damn big.  A country like England, which is the size of my apartment give or take, can't be as obsessed with property rights since there's only so much property to go around. (and hence England developing adverse possession law, etc)

It's so deeply embedded I wonder if it could be amended into greater moderation.

      •  I used to be on an ambulance squad (0+ / 0-)

a paid-volunteer squad.  It was extremely underfunded, but the local fire department was not--you never saw them hold bake sales to replace ancient trucks, the way we had to.  And firemen, who protect property, got pensions and all kinds of goodies from the state, while ambulance, who only protect life and limb, did not.  I hope that has changed a bit since I left the field.
