  •  the single most horrifying book i've ever read (7+ / 0-)

Forget the books listed in the horror and terror sections of the Barnes and Noble stores.  Forget Dean Koontz and Stephen King.  Forget stories of ghosts and monsters and supernatural horrors.

The Handmaid's Tail, a story about a nightmare created by man, is much more terrifying than any of those because it is absolutely plausible.  I knew it when I read it, back when it was initially released, and I knew it when Bush was elected, when it became once of my great fears.  After 9/11 I watched them strip our freedoms from us with our acquiescence and I wondered how far they could or would take it.  Now we know: they will take it as far as they can get away with it.

Would they strip women of the rights we have won?  Would they Talibanize us?  Somehow I think this is one of their greatest dreams.
