      The novel is in first person (it's presented as a secret diary IIRC), and like a lot of novels about totalitarianism, knowing what the protagonist thinks is crucial.

      I also think that making it right would ruffle too many feathers, since a lot of the description of the regime would hit a little too close to home for large chunks of the US right.
