  •  I had a long exchange on this one week (16+ / 0-)

And the logic and biology behind public health simply escaped the diarists. Measles outbreaks are very, very serious. They are recurring in this country, and the permanent disabilities (and even death) that result are tragic. Most sadly, it's often the immune compromised kid who couldn't get vaccinated who suffers from the stubbornness of the healthy family.

It's one of those things that is a by-product of the way our government has lost the faith of its citizens. Many people are not willing to believe that the government is insuring the safety of basic health procedures.

This is not simply an expression of an anti-scientific outlook. It is an expression of profound distrust of the for-profit medical establishment and the government regulators taht are in their pockets.

I vaccinate my kids and I'm persuaded by the debunking of the mercury in vaccines/autism link. On the other hand I'm struck by the recent proliferation of vaccines and can't help but wonder what the long-term consequences will be. And it is truly disconcerting not to feel I can trust federal regulators to be doing the right thing.

      Sick of candidate diaries? Kasama!

This may seem a bit of a birdwalk, but I think it's relevant. My summer home is in a town with one main industry--one that is the biggest spewer of mercury in the state! (Cement plant.) The state rate for adult handicap is 14 percent. In this town, it's 25 percent. They know that down-wind from that plant is one giant brownfield, but no one wants to think about it. Big business has convinced them--and parents--that mercury is no big deal.

Now, that's not a reason to avoid vaccines now. The Thymoseral is vastly reduced in the vaccines. But there are many other threats that are out there, and our government is doing squat.

That's what's going on with science these days. We know we SHOULD think about measles, chicken pox and bird flu...but basic survival gets in the way.
