Chafee had a reputation for being dumber than a box of rocks, but he at least was a principled dummy. I'll never quite understand why chose to go down with the dance band on the Titanic in 2006 when becoming a Democrat almost certainly would have saved his political career.

Leach did an awful lot of concern-trolling during the Clinton impeachment hearings, but he at least had the right voting record on issues when they counted ("nay" on the Iraq AUMF, "nay" on the Hate Amendment). He also got swept away by the 2006 tidal wave.

    •  Chafee's not a Republican anymore n/t (5+ / 0-)

    •  I don't know if I'll ever really forgive him... (4+ / 0-)

...for waiting until after he left the Senate to bail on the Republicans.

Basically, he decided that, rather than jumping ship and becoming a member of the Democratic caucus, it would be better to force the Democratic Party to dump a shitload of money into Rhode Island - money that could have been used in another state, and possibly helped to elect an extra Dem Senator - in a futile attempt to get re-elected as a member of a party that he doesn't agree with on anything.

If Lincoln Chafee had joined up with the Democrats - even as a Jim Jeffords style Independent - he'd still be a U.S. Senator today.  And, we might very well have an extra Dem in the Senate, as well, because we would have had more money to spend in places like AZ or TN.

      •  I wrote him a letter to this effect... (1+ / 0-)

... begging him to do so, during the run-up to the war in Iraq (I heard that my letter was passed around several congressional offices, actually).  And you're soooo right that he would still be in the Senate if he has done so.
