      While I'm sympathetic to certain libertarian arguments on an issue-by-issue basis the reality is that America already tried many of their economic ideas: its was called the Gilded Age, and it generally sucked.

      Liberals didn't enact the New Deal social safety net and regulation regimes because they were statists-for-statism's-sake; the people elected the New Dealers to provide a counter-balance to the power of unrestrained capital.

        The robber barons had their hands firmly on the levers of power.  How do you think the transcontinental railroad got built?

        And that is not libertarianism.  We'd rather not create those levers in the first place.

        This debate actually goes back to the Jeffersonians (Who were the original Classical Liberals) and the Hamiltonians who support gov intervention in lots of stuff.

        Results count for more than intentions do.
