    Cutting taxes for low-wage earners has the same impact as raising their wages, without necessarily setting off the same angry howling from the right-wing that minimum wage hikes always trigger.  The only problem is that even with such tax-cuts, wages for many workers would still be too low to meet their basic needs.  Still, it makes a great deal of sense.

      ...would actually end up being a wealth transfer (as it is in its current form, which is undoubtedly why many conservatives would still oppose a major expansion).  But it defuses the economists' criticisms of the minimum wage.  

      I of course would favor a major expansion of the EITC. I'd also favor a major expansion of the minimum wage.  I'm all about getting the job done and correcting imbalances (i.e., the increase in unemployment, budget deficits) where they pop up.
