Unfortunately, Kos' post doesn't quite tell the whole story, and this "pox on both their houses" stance bothers me a great deal.

I'm all for assessing responsibility where it's due, and I speak as a UAW member and the son and grandson of UAW members.  Re CAFE standards, the UAW took the wrong stance for the "right" reason.

What the UAW feared was that the auto companies would use tighter CAFE standards as an excuse to cut jobs.  Now, whether CAFE would actually compel this is outright wrong, but that doesn't matter.  If the companies wanted a reason to cut, they'd have found one with respect to CAFE and it would have been difficult for the UAW to fight that.

It should also be pointed out that the UAW has long advocated manufacturing a variety of cars, including smaller, more fuel-efficient ones.  They began that advocacy right after World War II.
