  •  That seems like the wrong general message to send (5+ / 0-)

it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses

    •  If you want to restart the Cold War, and all (4+ / 0-)

the military-industrial-security spending that goes with it, it is exactly the message you send.  Really, we should all be surprised Cheney didn't call for an escalation until today.

      •  Russia has no interest in (0+ / 0-)

invading and annexing ethnic Georgia, and doesn't need to. That would be self-defeating. Russia only needs to punish Georgia by lopping off South Ossetia and Abkhazia, acknowledging the independence both regions declared years ago.

And US saber-rattling that we're going to teach the Russians a lesson just makes laughing-stocks of us. We havent the means to do it, and the world knows it. The Bush Administration committed several hundred million dollars and 1200 US instructors/advisors preparing the Georgian army for Friday's failed invasion, and all it gained was an ass-kicking.

We shouldn't tolerate anymore threats and intimidation by Bush and Cheney.

Far better to resist the temptation to take sides. Call on all four parties (Georgia, Ossetia, Abkhazia, Russia) to return to the conference table, revive the peace plan proposed by the German foreign minister, and negotiate either guarantees of autonomy of Abkhazia and South Ossetia within Georgia, or full independence for both, much as was just done for Kosovo.

To restore their credibility the Georgians are going to have to give Saakashvili the boot. And NATO is going to have to turn down Georgia's application for membership. Attacking and shelling and unleashing ethnic cleansing on people you claim as your own citizens must not be tolerated, much less rewarded.
