    Get it right.

Georgia invaded a breakaway republic of its own, South Ossetia, which had conducted an internationally recognized referendum and voted for separation. The Georgians, who want to be part of NATO, for protection against Russia, have not been willing to give up South Ossetia, and keep trying to take it back. Russia, pissed off at being ignored on the Kosovo question, said it would protect the South Ossetians (there is a North Ossestia that is still part of the Russian state).

It's all a bunch of posturing, and now people are dead. The revanchist Georgians are to blame this time, and the NATO backers who keep promising NATO protection and membership... someday.

Russia deserves a lot of criticism for bullying, for lack of democratic practices, for violent repression of some minority national groups, etc. But this time, I think they have acted in a straightforward fashion (they said they'd protect the Ossetians), and the neo-cons who backed the Georgian demogogues caused this mess.

Regardless, it's a hot spot, and the Caucasus remains a troublesome area, and the possible flashpoint for a larger European war.
