    can you imagine one river supplying so much of the water capacity for so many Western states whose populations are growing at among the fastest rates in the nation?  

    and, now, global warming?

      ...there are lots of rivers out here in the west, albeit none as large as the colorado. and there are underground aquifers in a few western states, which are being depleted at an incredibly fast rate.

      it's not like we'd have as big a crisis, and maybe even have a manageable crisis, if we didn't put in lawns, if farmers here in the west used drip irrigation, if we found a better way to store water than open reservoirs, if a lot of other things changed...

      out here in the west, the watering of kentucky bluegrass lawns is tallied up in the agricultural use category. as far as i know, nobody ever harvests their lawns for dinner.
