if we are to ever live in a world that is not as insane as it is today, we must all judge everybody.  All of us must hold the nations of the world accountable. If you start considering who, as a state, has rights, you are paralysed. Who has rights? The Russians?  Certainly not. The US? Certainly not. The Europeans? Certainly not. Etc. Every nation state is so compromised that you cannot use that argument.

Until we fix the Iraq mess & put our own house in order, we have nothing to say to Russia that would not come off as the height of self-delusion and arrogance. How can someone who is the worse of the two -- and yes, that is us, -- sit there and lecture a country that is half as reckless as we are? That's like Paris Hilton lecturing Siena Miller on personal modesty.

And if I can just throw some fuel on the fire, when the hell did we ever deserve to be so full of ourselves? Are we a great nation because we exterminated the indigenous population of the land we now occupy? Are we a great nation because we have realised all of the idealistic lala of our constitution? It is a continuous litany of shame. I mean, c'mon. If this country lived by only the preamble to the declaration of independence, we'd have to go through a violent revolution! Isn't it true?
