And I have no idea if this letter is authentic or not. I grew up in a neighborhood that, quite incidentally, had a lot of Mormons in it. I say incidentally because the Mormon population wasn't particularly high in the area, but there was a cluster of Mormon families on my block, nevertheless.

Mormons do grassroots very well. When I was a kid, the political issue was ERA. They were highly organized to defeat any initiative that forbade discrimination based on sex. (Some of the wouldn't even buy Era laundry detergent.) They phone banked, canvassed, protested. They were impressively organized.

    •  They organized the same way against civil rights (4+ / 0-)

in so many other areas over the years, many times on positions they've since had to change to avoid public humiliation. They didn't allow blacks to hold the priesthood (Mormon magic) until they buckled under overwhelming pressure in the 70s in the aftermath of the civil rights movement.

They played it off as their prophet 'having a divine revelation' that blacks were now equal, despite having fought against such equality a decade earlier...such a fickle God, don't you think?

      •  Actually (0+ / 0-)

they always said that "someday" blacks would hold the priesthood.  No one who was paying attention to the doctrine was surprised at the change.  Most of the mormons I know were celebrating it as fulfillment of prophesy.

To be clear, I don't want to spend a lot of ink defending mormonism.  Clearly, I've thought better of it.  But the quick easy criticisms are almost always way off base.

but you left out that they would receive the Priesthood after they...

...became white-skinned, if they had lived pure lives.

          I'm not joking.
