my husband is a union attorney. He organizes those within the liquor industry mainly...salespeople, truck drivers, clerks associated with it, etc. He sees everyday how business tries to block unions. Recently on one of his organizing jaunts to the salespeople one group was completely against joining the union. They had all manner of excuses...said the company treated them well, paid ok, blah blah blah. my husband explained the bennies of the union particularly keeping them from getting fired for no reason. The group thought that was nonsense since they'd all worked for the company a long time so at this time they decided against the union. Well, wouldn't you know it but several days later they were fired...for BS reasons ( most likely just for attending a meeting about joining the union, but can't prove it). Hubby got a call from them, whining of course, and told them well, there's nothing I can do for you because you elected to not unionize. Needless to say the company hired new salespeople; younger and at much less pay. Some people just don't get it until it's too late.
