    1. That's just based on the ranges given in a survey of values for various assets and liabilities. If his mortgage is at the high end and the home value is at the low end of the range, then theoretically, he would be massively underwater and have negative net worth, but with the same ranges, the most realistic story is that his house is worth whatever amount it is and his mortgage is for less than that.
    1. This doesn't count his pension plan. If he retired today, he would receive $175,000 per year with Social Security and his Senate pension (80% of highest 3 years salary).
    1. Unless you're taking gifts and charging personal items to your official budget, being a senator costs a lot of money. You've got to project a very polished appearance in all aspects of your life to be taken seriously.

    He's in fine shape, he certainly has what he needs, but hasn't focused his energy on making more than he needs.
