  •  I do think it's inevitable. (12+ / 0-)

Sarah Palin is a treasure trove of gaffes and inconsistencies, much like her new boss. Tearing apart this ticket ought to be a true delight.

No matter how cynical I get, it's impossible to keep up.

    •  I'm amazed at their vetting.... (1+ / 0-)

There are so many rumors floating around about her.   My money is that most of them are false, but there are rumors she posed naked, the baby isn't hers, that her husband had inappropriate roles in her government, that she abused power (against an ass may make it justified, but not legal) and on and on.  Add to it that the majority leader in the Alaska Senate doesn't like her and hometown newspapers don't seem so keen on her....

They had two things that had traction with Obama in the general public -- first: "he's inexperienced" and second: all the rumors floating around ("he's a muslim", "he's not an american", blah blah blah).

They killed BOTH those advantages with her pick -- the inexperience argument is now dead and they will spend time debunking rumors and spending time on those rather than talking about how great their ticket is.

I would like to think they vetted her and decided the wingnut appeal out weighs these items, but based on passed experience of republican management and planning, I'm not so sure she was vetted.

      •  We don't need rumors to bury them (1+ / 0-)

. . . or at least we shouldn't, if we're doing our jobs.

The simple truths of their record should be enough to sink them--if the media will let us talk about serious issues, rather than who's more fun to hang out with.

My take, she is good at cheap publicity stunts and taking popular positions which lead to high approval ratings but she alienates a lot of politicians and journalists who actually have to work with her.

Her public blunders are already becoming clearer, she should lose the election and be forgotten very soon.

Fallows makes a prediction about Palin.

Let's assume that Sarah Palin is exactly as smart and disciplined as Barack Obama. But instead of the year and a half of nonstop campaigning he has behind him, and Joe Biden's even longer toughening-up process, she comes into the most intense period of the highest stakes campaign with absolutely zero warmup or preparation. If she has ever addressed an international issue, there's no evidence of it in internet-land.

The smartest person in the world could not prepare quickly enough to know the pitfalls, and to sound confident while doing so, on all the issues she will be forced to address. This is long before she gets to a debate with Biden; it's what the press is going to start out looking for.

So the prediction is: unavoidable gaffes.

A ship adrift in a sea of rhetoric & recycled clichés.
