One thing I've been realizing more and more as the years go by is that people are terrible at reasoning why they do the things they do. The "reasoning" isn't there at all, rather the judgment or decision bubbles up from the deep, and then this little layer of consciousness at the top of the brain stamps a label on top of that judgment/decision, and that is how we explain our motivations. But this is a lot like the sea captain thinking that he/she has control over the ocean.

People needed to feel right, they needed to feel comfortable about this person who is, as Obama has reminded us time and again, different from what they are used to as a Presidential candidate. He and his campaign have done what I feel is a masterful job at channeling these deeper, ofttimes unconscious feelings in large masses of voters. And it doesn't hurt that McCain is probably making people feel the equivalent of wanting to pee their pants right about now.

rationally and then do it for a living, think differently than most ordinary people.

That's my reverse way of saying the same thing.

Ordinary people do employ sound rational reasoning but not exclusively. Personality is important, so are lots of other inputs such as peers and authority figures.

This probably explains why the Republicans have invested a brazillion billion dollars in media, thinktanks and research over the generations, to make sure they have all the mainstream experience and cues rigged.

We hear a lot about people being stupid but the miserly conservatives must have thought otherwise to have spent that much money for so long at propaganda.
