...this can't be the first time this has ever been mentioned. Somebody at the U of F must be aware of this.

Look how long it's taking the University of Illinois to get rid of their blatantly racist "Chief Illiniwek" mascot. (Usually A white guy in "Indian" garb doing a fake dance at halftime. Sick)

is that this concept was unknown to me until this diary, and I'm a well-educated, pretty informed person.  Maybe it's my general nature to think good of most people, but I suspect that the concept might be unknown to a lot of Florida football fans as well.  Maybe I'm an idealist, but I don't think they (including the African American fans) are all doing that cheer to be racists. I'm not sure they know the racist background pointed out by the diarist here.

With an Obama doll in the mouth of the alligator?

I can't speak to sports fans and the hat, but the folks at the Repug convention know what message they are sending.

I have to believe that Florida fans shout "gator-bait" in reference to the mascot; I'm sure some know it's significance, but the majority are only thinking football, not racism...I hope, anyway.

With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably. JL Picard
