The reasons it thrives in rural areas include:

    a) The labs make a nasty stink, so they are easier to detect in populated areas and harder to detect where the distance between houses is larger.

    b) Rural economies are shot, creating an economic incentive for people to manufacture meth.

    c) City-based drug gangs and kingpins can afford to buy cheaper rural properties to set up meth labs.

I wouldn't exactly say LSD is harmless.  When used under proper conditions, with proper safeguards, the risks are exceptionally low.  Usually that means under medical supervision.  Some people have the intelligence to know how to use it safely outside of that context, but most don't.  Used without proper precautions, it can lead to psychiatric disturbances among people who are already predisposed.

IMHO the best place for LSD is in the research lab and in the psychiatrist's office.  Fortunately, FDA (and some of its overseas equivalents) have been getting far more accepting of human subject research involving psychedelics, over the past few years.  Some of this is leading to promising treatments for PTSD and other difficult conditions.  A study underway in Switzerland right now is looking at LSD for use by patients with life-threatening illnesses, as a means of coming to terms with impending death.

These compounds have much to offer in terms of pure research, understanding the mechanisms of perception and cognition.   Personally that's the greatest benefit I get from all of this: reading the research that comes out.

And of course, as you point out, psychedelics in any context are far safer than meth, for all the reasons you described.  Meth is a quick ticket to paranoid schizophrenia, which can make a person dangerous to others as well as to themselves.
