    Rather, I think the Latino population will likely split Republican/Democrat. There is the conservative religious element for one. But there is self-interest: a larger immigrant population is competition (how else to explain the Latino support for the Republican party in California, Arizona, and New Mexico)? But to back up a bit, there is no necessary reason to believe that Latinos see themselves as part of a white liberal, African American, Latino coalition.

    The Republicans have clearly realized in this last decade that Latinos were the only population they could target -- I say this even with the anti-immigration movements -- witness the Bush family courting, to start.
