Neither the Saud family nor the Wahabis are "medieval monarchists". They are both a much more recent concoction, dating only to the late 1800's, with an ascendancy during WWII. The rest is bathed in oil.

The Wahabi sect is a recent perversion of Islam which has persecuted Sufis and other Muslims not willing to conform to the Wahabi brand of religious intolerance and anti-female behavior. They are not well-liked in much of the Islamic world, but their alliance with the Saud Family, dating back to the early 1900's, and their control of the sacred cities of Mecca and Medina has given them the authority and ability to spread their virulence world-wide. Indeed, as Kerry has said, the Saudi's have not conducted one single investigation of financing of terrorist networks since 9-11, despite the direct participation of its nationals. I think he's on to something.

Iraq is deja vu all over again.

Yea, "medieval" was meant to demonstrate their pre-Enlightenment ideas and practices, not be chronologically correct.

      For the record:
Its founder Muhammad ibn-Abd al-Wahhab (1703-1792) was in many ways an Islamic Luther -- he criticized ritualism, worshipi of saints and holy places, rejected rationalist theology (as Luther criticized the Scholastics, esp Aquinas), emphasized only the first Holy Text, and was intollerant of other beliefs.  After his death, his followers captured Mecca in 1803.  The Alliance with the House of Saud is in the early 1900s (I think your correct).
So basically, the Muslims have had their REformation and the protestors are the problem, what they need is a friendly West and their own Enlightenment.
