    ... in the poll, I must admit that I'd have no objection to the state charging a convicted rapist with the cost of the kit used to gather the evidence against him ... after the trial.

    The victim, of course, should never have to pay for such expenses in the pursuit of justice. It's rather shocking that some jurisdictions apparently believe otherwise.

      I was in a car accident where we were hit by an uninsured driver. I had to pay $500 out of pocket for damages to my car (even though I am insured... stupid deductible). The cops said, "Well we sent a bill to the address the car that hit you was licensed to..."

      Right. I'll keep waiting for my $500 check, then.
