including Bob Barr and the Crazy Green party lady in the polls. Don't those additions really make the Obama edge much bigger?

I can't speak for every polling organization, but the company I work for does multiple polls. Some include Barr and McKinney (as well as other candidates, such as the Constitution Party candidate. Seriously), others only include Barack and McCain. My company routinely performs its own "in house" polls. This is for their own records and analysis, which is how they decide which way the trends are moving. When you see a major newspaper poll in cahoots with a major polling firm, it is important to remember that the newspaper is a CLIENT of the polling firm. The newspaper is paying for the surveys. Therefore, as a client, the newspaper decides what questions it wants asked and who it wants included in the presidential questions.

So, whereas a companies own internal polling would reflect many more candidates (and I have worked on these surveys so I can attest that they exist. I had a guy who was unequivocally for Cynthia McKinney!), those numbers aren't going to be published. What is published is what the newspaper or media outlet poll pays for, in which they decide what is asked and not the survey organization. It's a fascinating thing.

Always keep in mind, you are seeing numbers that are being paid for by a newspaper or media outlet who also decides the questions.
