  •  I text messaged my husband (6+ / 0-)

    "I love you" at 8:46.

He knew why immediately and texted back the same within the minute.

I missed sending the 9:03 message because I was on the phone with a client.

I still find this day unsettling as it brings back haunting memories of all of the things I experienced that day not watching television, the second plane hitting, and absurd conversation that took place in a cafe, the towers falling one by one, the crazy phone call with my nutty mother, the parents covered head-to-toe in ash as they picked up their children from my daughter's school, the barricades and having to get back into my home and work neighborhood with ID, the smell (oh God, that smell) that took weeks to get out of the air and my nose. The fine-grained ash on the balcony adornments of my Neo-Gothic office building.

For a full year after that I was afraid of the sound of a plane's engine and was afraid to be near anything that seemed like the next target.

It didn't help that the President of the United States was cynically manipulating my fear and fears of all of us for his own separate political ends.
