  •  Abortion Will Always Be Available (3+ / 0-)

Prior to Roe v. Wade abortion was available on a state by state basis and that's what it will return to if Roe is overturned.  That was back well before the internet and getting information about where abortions were available and where they were safe was a serious problem.

I know.  I worked with a small group that would help women and girls find the means to get the money, or give them the money, in order to go to another city in another state to get an abortion.  If Roe is overturned, then there will just have to be groups like that formed again.  In todays world, with the net, it will be much easier to do, but it takes dedication and money.

Planned Parenthood was also available if the women did not mind the lack of privacy.  It seemed there were always folks outside taking pictures and trying to cause trouble.  Our group was small and avoided all the publicity.

Plan for this to happen again if we can't get Obama elected.  I'll be one of the first asking for money and volunteers if it happens again.

It is true that if Roe vs Wade were overturned, states could pass laws allowing abortions. BUT those states would have to pass the laws & what do you think the Right to Life people would do after being emboldened by Roe vs Wade's demise?

This would mean pro-choice people would be spending decades of their lives fighting for abortion rights in state after state.   And fighting for their rights each time a new state legislature is elected.

While it is true that abortions will never end in this country (I too am old enough to remember the pre Roe vs Wade era) for many poor women, terminating a pregnancy would not be an option.

Roe vs Wade needs to remain the law at the Federal level, passing that decision on to the states would be an absolute disaster.

      •  Laws Still On The Books (0+ / 0-)

As far as I can tell, the laws are still on the books in the states that allowed abortion before Roe (at least in the states we used to use).  They would have to rescind those laws in order for them not to take affect once Roe was overturned.

I do agree though, if we can keep Roe as the law of the land, then life would be much simpler.  That's why I care more about the Supreme Court appointments then any of the issues that are current hot topics.  A bad judge or two can screw the country for decades.

in urban areas. Poor and rural women likely won't have those networks, and the options for them will be unsafe and far between.

wants to criminalize abortion. Repealing RVW would be the first, irrevocable step. My mother lost three friends to abortions in the thirties. "Women are criminals--they must be controlled." That is the mantra of the rightwing forced-birthers.

    •  Abortion ships in international waters (0+ / 0-)

That's what they do in Ireland where abortion is illegal. Ships coming from the Netherlands stay in international waters, and dingies come and pick women who want an abortion ashore to take them to the doctors on the boats.
