and specifically Ubuntu, but it's weird and strangely enough unstable on my laptop (HP Pavilion dv9000). I likee Mandriva with KDE, but it breaks constantly even on my desktop-s dual-boot (weird error, title bars stop working). And the software update utility routinely crashes on both computers and requires complex console commands to get it running again. And I can't get the two Linux OSs to share with each other on my LAN, even though hubby's two Windows computers can talk to either Linux system and the Windows boot on the desktop can talk to the Linux-using laptop.

I don't know if it's that my systems were designed for Windows or what, but my feeling after trying three different versions of Linux on two separate computers is that work is still left to be done on compatibility and user-friendliness. If I didn't have two computers, there's no way I could have gotten either one running, as I frequently had to get online on one to find solutions to technical problems on the other.

And yeah. It's still rough going …

Good news on the hardware user-friendliness part, though — Ubuntu Intrepid is going to support X Input Hotplug, meaning basically you plug in the mouse and it damn well works for once …

Have used a variety of mice here and yet to see a problem; if it is the MS LaserPoint 10K Ultra with 20 buttons then some of the buttons may not work, even in Intrepid. MS does not seem to have a lot of Linux drivers out there atm :)

has trouble. And really, I lurvs me the extra buttons on my Logitich Revolution mice.

Also it'll help with keyboards with media buttons.

info than 'strangely unstable' then a fix is likely; launchpad.net is where ubuntu hosts its bug-tracking (a frequent stopping point of mine).

to users, though, unless you're really deeply familiar with the system (and forums have already failed you).

('Course, some projects are friendlier than others … I work a lot with the Hibernate library, and its lead guys are famously prickish with newbies who ask for help on the bug tracker … though it does cut down heavily on bug spam.)
