... in a review of a three-part biography of Dostoyevsky:

** Am I a good person? Deep down, do I even really want to be a good person, or do I only want to seem like a good person so that people (including myself) will approve of me? Is there a difference? How do I ever actually know whether I'm bullshitting myself, morally speaking? **

    and

** Is the real point of my life simply to undergo as little pain and as much pleasure as possible? My behavior sure seems to indicate that this is what I believe, at least a lot of the time. But isn't this kind of a selfish way to live? Forget selfish—isn't it awful lonely? **

It's hard not to go back now an re-read a lot of his writing as a cry for help. He'd had the simplicity of that formula, and demolish it, but parts of his writing are so raw, it now seems obvious how bad off he was.

But from the few snippets of DFW that I've read after his death was announced - that's the precise impression that I had formed.
