  •  Actually, early voting is pretty easy where I am (3+ / 0-)

in Fairfax County.  We were out of the U.S. on election day 2006, so my husband and I voted early (called 'absentee in person' voting).  Usually, they have weekend and evening hours to do this, and all you have to do is fill out a form with your personal data, check off the reason you can't vote on election day, show ID (voter reg. card, driver's license, etc.), and sign.  In my experience, the poll workers at the absentee-in-person locations are extremely helpful and no 'proof' of your reason is required--just your signature on the form.

Maybe procedures are different elsewhere, but in Fairfax County, voting early is painless and probably a lot better option for anyone who's commuting on election day than standing in what will undoubtedly be long lines at the polls.
