    he was confused - but the statements after the fact seem to indicate an adversarial stance.

    I think McCain still has a cold war mentality - so the multiple party systems of Europe - don't fit into his framework.  He is very uncomfortable dealing with
    "socialists".

      easier in the Cold War.  You hunted Domestic Reds; you hated Russia -- all of it; there was one enemy; and you only had to learn a few key Russian terms.

      Now, gee whiz, Sunni, Shi'a, Afghanistan, Iraq -- which sounds so much like Iran... Al Quada, Hammas, Spain...

      What a dope.

      especially if all you can understand is that the leader in question has a Spanish surname.  

      It's interesting that they'd rather push the "He's crazy, He's bellicose, He's ready to fight even our friends" than risk "He's old and he can't hear and is easily confused..."
